How to choose the right stage for your child

In shortUse age as a starting point, then adjust after two or three steps. If three stars keep coming, move ahead. If one star or fewer keeps coming, we suggest moving to an easier unit.

On Learn, tapping age 6 suggests Intro, age 7 suggests Stage 1, and from age 8 the stage for that age. The suggestion looks only at age, so it may not match what your child can do today.

Intro or Stage 1?

This is the most common question for ages 6 and 7. These descriptions should help.

  • Intro: counting to 10, comparing, joining and splitting, and adding and subtracting within 10. Start here if matching numerals to quantities is still hard.
  • Stage 1: numbers to 20 with adding and subtracting. It assumes your child already knows sums within 10, such as 3 + 4 = 7.

Adjust after the first results

After two or three steps, use the table below. These are suggestions rather than rules.

ResultSuggested next move
Three stars in a rowTry the next unit. If that is still easy, try the first unit of the next stage.
Mostly two starsThis is the right stage. Use “Try again” once, then move on.
Mostly one starRead “Learn first” and the explanations together, then try again.
Steps with no stars in a rowMove to an earlier unit or stage.

If your child is struggling, move somewhere easier and let confidence come back first. Stars already earned stay where they are.

Stage 2 and up are provisional

Intro and Stage 1 split each activity into its own small step. Stages 2 to 7 are provisional, based on the elementary curriculum, so they have fewer steps and each step covers more. We plan to split them further, and units and steps may change when we do.

The school grade shown on each stage is a rough guide and may not match your child’s class. Compare what your child is learning at school with the unit names in the stage.
